Science Department Philosophy
The Science Department at Tashkent International School believes that students should be provided with learning opportunities that engage them in an inquiry-based science education. We believe that the teaching and learning of scientific concepts and processes should be unified by providing a variety of experiences that include the consideration of moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology.
Program of Study:
Grade 6: Integrated Science
Integrated science emphasizes holistic learning and encourages the development and acquisition of scientific inquiry skills and transferable thinking skills. Students are introduced to the concept of fair testing through studies of scientific models, levers and pulleys, food and nutrition, and states of matter.
Grade 7: Integrated Science
Skills introduced in grade 6 are developed further in grade 7 within the context of classification and cells, energy, and the fundamental structure of matter.
Grade 8: Integrated Science
Students continue to integrate conceptual understanding and procedural understanding through the discovery of circulation and respiration, geological processes, and environmental chemistry.
Grade 9: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
In grade 9 students are offered trimester-long courses in biology, chemistry and physics. Students continue to strengthen their technological skills in scientific contexts that also allow them to develop intercultural awareness and communication skills.
Grade 10: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
In grade 10 students are offered semester-long courses in biology, chemistry and physics. In one semester, they study two of the science disciplines; in the second semester, they study the remaining science course. Students continue to strengthen their technological skills in scientific contexts that also allow them to develop intercultural awareness and communication skills.
Grades 11 and 12: International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Sciences
Biology, chemistry and physics are offered at both standard and higher levels. Students choose one or two of the three disciplines to study for both years of the Diploma Programme. Students continue to develop technology and communication skills while becoming more specialized and knowledgeable in one or two of the scientific disciplines. Students are also encouraged to consider the moral responsibilities of scientists and the use of the scientific capacity for developing sustainable societies.
