Student-Led Conferences- How to Support Your Child
Student-led conferences are a time to empower your child in his or her learning. Research shows that a focus on student effort rather than ability has a profound positive impact on student achievement. Follwing is a link to an excellent Ted Talk that illustrates the importance of how we praise children – The Power of Belief – Mindset and Success.
In the elementary, teachers and students have been working on goal setting to facilitate parent-student conversations. Goal setting allows students to concentrate on the process of learning rather than their current skill level. It focuses on the work needed to achieve a goal. Parents are key to supporting learning; below are some examples of comments parents can make to help their children achieve their goals.
Positive Parent Comments:
“I see that you have done some revisions on this (picture, story, problem). Tell me how you chose to make these changes.”
“What steps will you take to achieve your goal? How can I support you?”
