One of the core values at Tashkent International School is to give students service learning opportunities where they can reach out into the community and help others.
TIS has several active service learning groups in both the elementary and secondary schools. Some groups help out in orphanages, others raise awareness for charity programs. All of them are student-run with staff facilitators that help guide and direct the students.
In this story, we’ll highlight two current service projects taking place at TIS. Please check back to this page later to learn about the other great service learning activities sponsored by the TIS students.
Movember at TIS
The elementary and secondary student councils (STUCO) have come together to help support an international charity called Movember, which works around the world to “change the face of men’s health” by raising awareness about men’s cancer and mental health issues.
The challenge with Movember is that men are asked to begin November with a clean-shaven face and then grow a mustasche for the entire month. At the end of Movember, students and staff will vote for the best mustache.

Other student groups have gotten in on the activity of Movember, including the secondary catering council, which will provide special mustache cookies.
Donations given to the councils for Movember will go to men’s cancer foundations globally to fund research and treatment programs.
All men in the TIS community are invited to participate in Movember. To be a included, come to school for your “before” photo and join the excitement of Movember. To see the current list of contenders, visit the TIS Facebook page.
Helping an Orphanage
Students in the elementary Make a Difference group have been actively involved in partnering with a small orphanage just outside Tashkent. Last year and this school year they have visited the orphanage a few times, bringing out fruit and cookies and playing games with the children.
This fall they want to raise money to help buy extra medicines and other things the children need, including baby cereal. During UN Day on Saturday, October 26, the students in elementary MAD set up a table in the service learning display and helped raise awareness and funds for the orphanage. They also hope to do a car wash soon on campus.
Last year the MAD group sponsored a fun run at the Tashkent Botanical Gardens. They raised enough money to buy an electric water heater for the orphanage.
